The Wachau: 10-minute overview

The jaw-dropping gateway to the profoundly distinctive white wines of Austria

This small stretch of the Danube in Lower Austria is the gateway to the country's often wonderful white wines.

Producing only 3% of the country's output, its extraordinary confluence of geology, climate and culture conspire to conjure memorable wines every bit as beautiful as its landscape.

This video aims to give a detailed overview of the region, its growing conditions, traditions and wines.

It could not have been put together without the kind collaboration of my friends at Domäne Wachau, who supplied much of the footage and who—notably Roman Horvath MW—have been hugely helpful guides on my own path to a deep appreciation of Austrian wine.
